Little documentation

User feedback

Send what your users say about an agent's replies (thumbs, ratings, comments, surveys) to LittleDB, where reviews, trials and rollback weigh it next to the judges. Private source; not installable.

LittleDB: private source (@little-stack/littledb 0.1.0-alpha.2). Not on npm and not publicly available, so there is no public install path. Sections labeled UNRELEASED describe source-only changes. Release status

Private and UNRELEASED

@little-stack/littledb is private source and is not on npm, and it needs a LittleDB server, which is not publicly available. The examples below will not work for you until both are released. Harness Outcome Capture to local traces works without it.

An LLM judge grades what it can see in a trace. Your users notice what it cannot: the refund amount was right but the reply never said when the money arrives, the page compiled but it is not what they asked for. User feedback sends what they said to LittleDB, next to the judges' scores, so the review loop hears it too.

You build the feedback UI you want, whether that is a thumbs up and down on each message, a rating or a survey at the end of a conversation. The client gives you three ways to pass the answers on:

  1. Reactions and outcomes, automatically: give db.outcomeSink() to a Harness chat connector or to reportHarnessOutcome.
  2. From your backend: db.feedback().
  3. From the browser: mount db.feedbackHandler() on your backend, so the browser never holds the API key.

Each answer is stored as a score with source user on the trace of the turn it is about.

Reactions and outcomes

Harness chat connectors record ๐Ÿ‘ and ๐Ÿ‘Ž on the agent's replies as outcomes. The outcome sink turns each one into user feedback, and the same sink works for outcomes your code reports:

// Private, UNRELEASED.
const tracer = db.harnessTracer({ harness: "support-desk" });
const feedback = db.outcomeSink({ tracer });

export default chatSdkConnector({
  // ...
  reactions: { sinks: [feedback] },
});

await reportHarnessOutcome({ session, status: "failure", detail: "Wrong refund amount.", sinks: [feedback] });
Outcome fieldBecomes
status: "success" / "failure"A thumbs up / down
status: "partial"A rating of 3 out of 5 (stored as 0.5)
score between 0 and 1A rating on the same 1..5 scale instead; the exact score stays in metadata.outcome.score
detailThe comment
reporterThe user id (reactions use anon_<16 hex>)
reportKeyThe stable id, so a changed reaction replaces the earlier one
retracted: trueWithdraws it, unless the same person has since reacted the other way
turnIdThe trace the tracer wrote for that turn; with no turn (a reaction), the session's latest trace

Every outcome goes under one score name, thumbs (feedbackName changes it). Pass the tracer that traced the sessions so the sink uses its trace ids. The sink never throws into the run: a failure goes to onError and the harness counts it as a failed sink.

From your backend

// Private, UNRELEASED.
import { feedbackId } from "@little-stack/littledb";

await db.feedback({
  traceId, // the turn the message came from
  userId: hashedUserId, // pseudonymous
  id: feedbackId(hashedUserId, messageId), // send again with the same id to change the answer
  thumbs: "down",
  comment: "Didn't say when I'd get my money",
});

// An end-of-conversation survey: the session's latest turn.
await db.feedback({
  sessionId,
  userId: hashedUserId,
  id: feedbackId(hashedUserId, `survey:${sessionId}`),
  survey: "csat-v1",
  answers: [
    { question: "resolved", value: true },
    { question: "ease", value: 4, scale: 5 },
    { question: "reason", choice: "too slow" },
    { question: "anything_else", text: "..." },
  ],
});

await db.retractFeedback(feedbackId(hashedUserId, messageId));

Feedback needs a traceId or a sessionId, and at least one of thumbs, rating ({ value, scale }, 1 to scale, scale 2..10, default 5), comment (at most 4000 characters) or answers (at most 20). name renames the thumbs or rating score. A trace does not have to be sent yet: a click can arrive before it. db.feedback() is sent at once, not queued; it returns { traceId, scores } and throws LittleDBError, or TypeError for feedback it can tell is invalid.

The trace of a turn: right after the turn, tracer.traceIdFor(sessionId); from the turn id every harness event carries, tracer.traceIdForTurn(sessionId, turnId). Keep it with the message you show and send it back with the feedback.

From the browser

// app/api/feedback/route.ts. Private, UNRELEASED.
const handler = db.feedbackHandler({
  authorize: async (request) => {
    const user = await currentUser(request);
    return user === undefined ? null : { userId: hash(user.id) }; // null answers 401
  },
  // Optional: map the browser's message id to its turn, after checking it is theirs.
  resolveTrace: async ({ messageId, sessionId }, { userId }) =>
    messageId !== undefined ? await traceOfMessage(messageId, userId) : sessionId === undefined ? null : { sessionId },
});

export { handler as POST, handler as DELETE };

The browser posts the same fields as db.feedback(), plus messageId, as JSON to that route, and sends DELETE ?id=<id> to take an answer back. The handler is a plain Fetch handler (Request in, Response out). It stores the userId that authorize returns and ignores one in the body; sends an id (default: messageId) as feedbackId(userId, id), so one user cannot replace or withdraw another's answers; refuses bodies over 16 KiB (maxBodyBytes) and requests without a JSON content type; answers 400 for invalid feedback and 404 when resolveTrace returns nothing; and answers LittleDB's own errors with a short message, never its error body or anything about the key.

Privacy

  • User ids are pseudonymous. LittleDB stores userId with each score. Send a hash of your user id, never an email address or a name.
  • Comments are stored as text. LittleDB shows them to its reviewer as quoted, untrusted data, never as instructions.
  • Least privilege. The backend that forwards feedback needs an API key with the feedback scope, which can send and withdraw feedback and nothing else. An ingest key works too.

What LittleDB does with it

  • Scores. A thumbs is 1 or 0. A rating is stored on 0..1 as (value โˆ’ 1) / (scale โˆ’ 1), with the original in metadata.raw and metadata.scale. A survey answer is a score named after its question. Below 0.5 is negative.
  • Reviews. A review reads a summary per signal for the live version and up to 10 recent complaints with their comments, and can search traces by feedback. After policy.feedback.reviewAfterNegatives negative answers since the last review (default 10), LittleDB starts a review on its own when a model is configured.
  • Trials, release watch and rollback. Feedback exists only on live traffic, so offline experiments skip it. policy.feedback.gate is "harm" by default: a change fails only when users are clearly less happy, with at least minResponses answers per side (default 20), and too little feedback never holds a change up. "require" waits until users are shown to be no less happy, and fails if the trial ends first. "off" turns the gate off. A clearly better user signal counts toward the improvement gate, and the release watch rolls a version back when one is clearly worse.

Read it back with db.request() and a read key: GET /feedback/summary, GET /feedback, GET /feedback/themes, and GET /evaluators/:id/agreement (how often a judge agrees with your users).
